Materials: Microporous Carbon Bricks and High-Alumina/Silicon Carbide bricks.Specialty: Requires extreme resistance to molten iron (hot metal) and slag erosion while maintaining high thermal conductivity in the hearth to prevent "salamander" penetration. Note: The hearth uses carbon blocks to ensure long campaign life, while the stack utilizes abrasion-resistant bricks to survive the constant descent of abrasive raw materials.
Materials: High-Alumina Low Cement Castables (LCC) and Insulating Firebricks.Specialty: Designed to withstand high-pressure reducing atmospheres (H2 and CO) without the refractory disintegrating due to carbon monoxide "bursting."Note: These linings prioritize low iron content ($Fe_2O_3 < 1\%$) to prevent chemical reactions with the process gas at temperatures around 1000°C.
Materials: Magnesia-Carbon (MgO-C) bricks and Magnesite Ramming Masses. Specialty: Must endure rapid thermal cycling, intense electrical arcs, and aggressive slag chemistry; the hearth often uses "dry" ramming mass for easy maintenance. Note: The "slag line" is the most critical area, requiring high-purity Mag-Carbon bricks with antioxidant additives to prevent oxidation of the graphite.
Materials: Alumina-Magnesia-Carbon (Al-Mg-C) bricks and Spinel-forming castables. Specialty: These materials are "functional," meaning they slightly expand during use to create tight joints, preventing molten steel from leaking through the lining. Note: The bottom and impact zone are reinforced to handle the kinetic energy of the steel stream during tapping from the furnace.
Materials: High-Alumina Plastic Refractories and Ceramic Fiber Modules. Specialty: Focused on high thermal shock resistance and energy efficiency; fiber modules are used in the roof to reduce heat loss and allow for fast startup/shutdown. Note: The hearth (soaking zone) utilizes dense, abrasion-resistant castables to withstand the mechanical wear of heavy steel slabs or billets sliding across the surface.
Materials: Magnesia-based Spray Masses and Alumina-Silica Back-up linings. Specialty: The working lining is usually a "disposable" MgO spray or board system that ensures clean steel production by preventing inclusion pick-up. Note: Advanced tundish refractories often include "flow control" components like dams and weirs to optimize the residence time of the steel.
